Egyptian Life and the Nile River
The Nile river is located in northeastern Africa and is the longest river in the world. Its principal source is Lake Victoria, in east central Africa. The Nile flows north through Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea, with a total distance of 5584 km. The river basin covers an area of more than 3,349,000 sq km. The first great African civilization developed in the northern Nile Valley in about 5000 BC. Dependent on agriculture, this state, called Egypt, relied on the flooding of the Nile for irrigation and new soils. Ruled by Egypt for about 1800 years, the Kush region of northern Sudan subjugated Egypt in the 8th century BC. Pyramids, temples, and other monuments of these civilizations blanket the river valley in Egypt and northern Sudan. To Egypt, the Nile is seen as the fountain of life. The ancient Egyptians were not in love with death, but with life! They enjoyed their life to the fullest. They worked very hard, but were certain to save time to enjoy with family, friends and their children. Egyptians also loved festive parties, fishing, sailing and other recreational activities. They believed in an afterlife and that people enjoyed many of the same activities in their afterlife as they did in their current life. They prepared for their afterlife by filling their own tombs with small and large statutes of friends and family. They believe these items help them have a good time in their afterlife! Animals were very important to the ancient Egyptians. In fact, Egyptian gods had animal heads. Cats, especially, were held in high esteem. The ancient Egyptians believed that cats had magical powers and that cats protected their home and children from danger, and helped their crops to grow. The ancient Egyptians carefully protected their cats. Any person who killed a cat, weather it be on purpose or by accident, paid for that crime with their life! Something interesting about Egyptians is that not only did they use sundials in Egypt for telling the time, but a water dial was also used on cloudy days.
